Buster Welch Legacy Fund
for Therapeutic Riding
Buster Welch was a legendary horse trainer and cutting horse icon, known for shaping the sport and mentoring generations of riders. Born in 1928 in Texas, Buster spent his life working cattle, ranching, and developing some of the finest cutting horses in history, including Mr. San Peppy and Peppy San Badger. A founding member of the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA), he was inducted into
multiple halls of fame for his extraordinary contributions to horsemanship and ranching culture.
In his early 70s, following a debilitating stroke, Buster inadvertently turned to therapeutic riding as part of his recovery. Returning to the saddle became a vital part of his rehabilitation—restoring his balance, coordination, and spirit. Even after decades as a professional horseman, Buster experienced firsthand the healing power of the horse in a new, deeply personal way. His story became a testament to the value of therapeutic riding—not just for children or
individuals with lifelong disabilities, but for anyone in need of healing, strength, and connection.
The Buster Welch Legacy Fund for Therapeutic Riding is a dedicated endowment established to honor the life and values of legendary horseman Buster Welch. Created to support the long-term growth and mission of Camp Able of Buffalo Gap, this fund ensures that individuals with special needs will continue to experience the healing power of the horse for generations to come. Through sustained financial support, the Legacy Fund helps expand programs, care
for therapy horses, and provide life-changing opportunities for riders—preserving Buster’s spirit of resilience, horsemanship, and compassion.
Camp Able of Buffalo Gap, a 501c3 established in 2014, is committed to operating at the forefront of the therapeutic riding industry. In partnering with the Welch family, our mission to empower individuals with special needs through therapeutic riding and inclusive skills-based programs, will have the ability to grow and evolve just as our riders do.
The Buster Welch Legacy Fund is managed by Cedar Gap Wealth Management on behalf of Camp Able, ensuring responsible stewardship and long-term impact.
